A Winthrop man who was an employee of a JetBlue sub-contractor died in a forklift accident at Logan Airport in Boston around 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

The 51-year-old attempted to drive a forklift through a lower bag service entrance in an outdoor loading area behind Gate C26, an initial investigation shows. A beam over the entrance was marked with a sign labelling it as having a clearance of eight feet and six inches, but the forklift's backrest extension was raised, making it too tall the clear the entrance.

The backrest crashed into the beam and ejected the man onto the pavement. The forklift then tipped over and fell on top of him.

A JetBlue employee heard the crash and several JetBlue employees rushed to lift the forklift using an aircraft tow bar.

Massachusetts State Police arrived moments later and attempted to save the man's life.

Massport Fire and Boston EMS took over medical aid. EMS then took the man to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's name has not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.
